INTERNATIONAL COURT OF COMPETITIVE ARBITRATION
IUHC–ICA–2022–014 2022
The Dining Room Agreement
In re: The Unanimous Championship Agreement (2022)
- Issue Presented
- Whether unanimous agreement among competitors constitutes valid championship authorization.
- Disposition
- Agreement recognized. Championship claim denied.
OPINION OF THE COURT
The matter arose following a household competition in which all four participants agreed, prior to the first card being dealt, that the winner would be recognized as World UNO Champion.
The agreement was made verbally and subsequently documented in writing.
All four participants signed.
One participant additionally wrote the word “OFFICIAL” across the top of the document.
Following the match, the prevailing competitor petitioned the Hall for recognition, submitting the signed agreement and statements from all participants, including reigning champion Stephen Boudreau.
The Court examined the evidence.
It found the document authentic, the signatures valid, and the agreement unanimous.
The Court further determined that all four individuals had entered into the agreement voluntarily and understood its terms.
These findings were not contested.
However, under Article VII of the International Competition Charter, championship sanctioning authority rests exclusively with the Championship Sanctioning Committee.
None of the four participants was a member of that Committee.
The Court therefore concluded that the agreement was valid as an expression of the participants’ intentions but insufficient to establish a World Championship event.
The Court commended the parties for documenting their agreement so thoroughly.
It also noted that the document had been prepared without the involvement of anyone authorized to approve it.
The agreement was recognized. The championship was not.
BINDING PRECEDENT
Unanimous consent does not confer sanctioning authority.
